Фонд Баухаус Дессау уже в четвертый раз представляет свою международную премию. В этом году приглашаются принять участие, независимо от профессии и дисциплины, авторы тех проектов, которые могут быть отнесены к теме “обновление модернизма”. Модернизм, по сути своей – бесконечно длящийся проект, который постоянно уточняется и заново определяется на основе своего внутреннего содержания. Более того, скорость его приспособления к историческим реалиям все время возрастает: классический модернизм, послевоенный модернизм, постмодернизм, второй модернизм…
Фонд интересуют идеи и проекты, разработанные новым поколением дизайнеров, которые соотносят себя с основными ценностями модернизма, но, заглядывая в будущее, стремятся “осовременить” его. Таким образом, проекты разной степени разработанности, представляемые на рассмотрение жюри премии, должны быть посвящены экспериментам с методами черчения и разработке процессов, в результате которых происходит разного рода трансформация модернизма.
Премия была основана в 2000 году, на данный момент это признанная во всем мире награда за достижения в областях градостроительства, архитектуры, дизайна и искусства.

4. INTERNATIONAL BAUHAUS AWARD 2006 || ›Updating Modernism‹ || March 2006 || In 2006 the Bauhaus Dessau Foundation will be presenting the 4th International Bauhaus Award. The emphasis this time is on design projects, irrespective of disciplines and professions, which tackle the ›Updating Modernism‹. Modernism is a never-ending project that is constantly redefined – and, indeed, has to be redefined – from within itself. Moreover, the speed with which the visible evidence of Modernist design is allocated to historical categories, such as Classical Modernism, Post-War Modernism, Post-Modernism, Second Modernism, etc., is increasing all the time. || The Foundation is interested in ideas and projects developed by a new generation of designers, who identify with the basic values of Modernism but – with an eye on the future – are keen to advance them in respect of design. Concepts and completed projects entered for the Award will, therefore, need to focus on experiments with methods of drafting and on visions for the design of processes that take up Modernism and transform it. || Conferred for the first time in 2000, the Bauhaus Award has advanced to become an internationally acclaimed competition addressing issues of the city, architecture, design and art. The first prize is worth 6,000, the second prize 4,000 Euro and the third prize 2,000 Euro. The competition is open to designers and researchers below the age of 40 at the time the award is presented. Competition entries can be submitted by individuals or a group.

PROJECTS || The Bauhaus Dessau Foundation has set out to develop designs for the future of our cities, drawing on an analysis of urban organisms in all their facets. || Economic, political and cultural instruments are now being developed and tested to solve present-day social problems in an urban context. The transformations underway in cities around the world call on designers to link different dimensions and levels of action. Urban planning, architecture, visual and performing art, design and the social sciences and humanities form the disciplinary foundations for this complex challenge. || Design work at the Bauhaus in the 1920s targeted buildings, modern houses and their interior design to be precise, and estates on the edge of town. The need at that time was to provide healthy housing for a growing urban population under difficult economic conditions. The responses by the Neues Bauen movement were visionary and practical at the same time; they sought take advantage of new technologies, to achieve a breakthrough for rationality and to rise even to social challenges through a functional form. || If the focus of its work today is on the urban scene, the Bauhaus Dessau Foundation also has to confront the consequences of its own history. We can witness phenomena associated with what are commonly labeled globalization, virtual and theme worlds, periphery and Americanization of cities, information society and individualization in all cities around the world. Housing developments and public buildings, factories and public spaces, their interrelationships, their use by locals and outsiders, the power of deposal and right of design over urban space must be analyzed to move on to new blueprints. This is the concern of the experimental work conducted by the Bauhaus Dessau Foundation. || Starting in 2000, the Bauhaus is conferring a biennial BAUHAUS AWARD in the three categories of architecture and urban planning, art and design and theoretical and conceptual work. Young designers and scholars will be invited to compete for one of the prizes on recommendation. || The foundation´s priorities include an extensive restoration program which respects the building´s status as a monument and therefore accommodates the practical requirements of today´s work while adapting the use to the building. The restoration program is flanked by ongoing research on the structural history of the Bauhaus and the classics of modern architecture. || The foundation draws on a vast variety of media exhibitions, publications and the Internet as well as conferences, seminars and workshops to publicize the results of its work and put them up for debate. || Stage presentations and other events help to lend the Bauhaus a lively and creative atmosphere.

INTERNATIONAL BUILDING EXHIBITION STADTUMBAU 2010 (URBAN REDEVELOPMENT) || In 2002, the State of Saxony-Anhalt entrusted the Bauhaus Dessau Foundation and the Saxony-Anhalt State Development Company, SALEG, with the preparation and staging of the International Building Exhibition IBA Stadtumbau 2010. An IBA Office was consequently set up, which has been accommodated since February 2004 in the refurbished rooms of Walter Gropius’ former building studio at the Bauhaus in Dessau. || The objective of the International Building Exhibition is to build up practical urban redevelopment expertise at the state and local level and to devise pilot schemes that will set standards for international urban research and design under the conditions of demographic change. || 15 towns and cities in Saxony-Anhalt have joined the IBA in the meantime and are addressing issues of specific relevance to them. A decision on the participation of other towns is to be taken in spring 2005. || The issues taken up by the towns already involved illustrate the individual paths and profiles to which the local authorities wish to gear their strategies for reorganisation and redevelopment processes. They have consequently come up with broad range of ideas and concepts. Aschersleben, Eisleben and Wittenberg, for example, are concentrating in their redevelopment plans on upgrading and spotlighting their historical town centres, while Köthen is aiming to raise its profile as an international competence centre for homoeopathic medicine. Weißenfels, meanwhile, is using urban redevelopment to bring about strategic development partnerships between the local authority and a network of the local food industry in order to enhance its long-term prospects as a business location. || The work of the IBA Office consists for the most part of providing support and advice for the towns and cities in developing and implementing their ideas. Of great importance here are the different communication projects designed to draw local and national attention to the activities of the IBA towns and invite them to join in. The IBA network of towns has become an important platform for an exchange of experiences and ideas. The 6th and 7th town network conferences are scheduled for spring and autumn 2005.

UMBAUSTADT DESSAU || Urban redevelopment planning workshop || Dessau – Heidestrasse Nord || Urban redevelopment. Transformation in an unknown state || What does a city that in 2010 no longer has a population of 100,00 but maybe 65,000 and in 2015 only 52,000 look like? What does a city that in the space of only 25 years shrinks to approximately half its size look like? || Where buildings falls, landscape evolves || Dessau would like to shape the shrinking process so that a new green area is formed and nature takes root in the town once more. In accordance with the basic “cut and paste” concept, built structures will be removed from the future free zone, so that the remaining urban core is made more dense, vital and attractive. Conversely, landscape modules will be introduced into the free zone, which allow a new “picture” of landscape to arise. || Bringing the Garden Realm into the city || In the development of the new landscaped area, the visuals and image of the Dessau-Wörlitzer Gartenreichs (Garden Realm of Dessau-Wörlitz) are taken up once more – at first as a brand and maybe later, hopefully, as a statement … The motif of groups of oak trees in ample meadows provides the basis for the new landscaped area. || Cultivation and care || Following the principles of cultivation and care, existing qualities will be exposed and revaluated. This brings a change of strategy! No longer will removal, dismantlement or demolition be communicated, but above all coalescence, shaping, and formulation - the breaking fresh ground. || Cultural repossession through active participation || Newly emerging free zones will be opened up. Residents and former residents of Dessau will be invited to take part in the creation of the green area by contributing to an “Oak Foundation”. || The urban redevelopment project of the city of Dessau is a joint project by the Bauhaus Dessau Foundation, the city of Dessau and the IBA Stadtumbau Saxony-Anhalt 2010.
